The Spanish High Court today accepted Elche’s request for an emergency injunction, presented yesterday, to stop their relegation to the second division for outstanding tax debts.
The relegation of Elche, imposed by the Liga’s judge for social affairs was confirmed by the Spanish Court for Sport, but will now be reviewed by the Spanish High Court. On Monday there will be a hearing with lawyers for the Spanish State, Elche and the Liga present.
Eibar, who finished in 18th place last season and will be relegated if Elche stay up, are also expected to ask to be represented.
The Liga confirmed to this newspaper that no matter what the outcome of Monday’s hearing is, there will not be 21 teams in the top flight in Spain next season. It’s either Elche or Eibar.
